Wow—What a ride! I started dabbling in brush calligraphy almost
three four years ago. I’ve mostly self-studied—I practiced, toiled, researched, bought books, copied, bought materials, experimented, tried, failed, practiced some more. I’ve also joined around three (or two?) workshops just to make sure I’m on the right path and not doing anything that harms my hands/posture/muscle memory in the long run.
Sofitel Manila’s Spiral has always been a special place for me to celebrate milestones and special occasions. It’s actually one of those few buffet places where the top-notch quality and unique gastronomical and sensorial experience actually justifies the price!
Welcoming 2018, they had a special New Year’s Brunch with live music and free-flowing French sparkling wine on top of the 21 dining ateliers (including the famed temperature controlled Cheese Room) from 12nn to 3pm for P4,215 net per person. Since my sister hosted their amazing New Year Countdown the night before, our group was treated to this amazing experience as well! Thanks, Janeena!!
Dinner the night before (December 31) was fantastic—Food was endless and taste was as usual, amazing. However, through no fault of Spiral, as it was understandable, there were some items that made a repeat during the brunch. (I mean, how can you not repeat the fresh lobster and the variety of pastries?) It was great though, because I got to sample more of their other offerings.
Who would’ve thought I’d be spending my last new year’s eve as part of the Chan household at the poolside of a five-star, world-class hotel celebrating and counting down with hundreds of strangers? I certainly didn’t.
Food was overflowing, drinks came non-stop, games were fun, prizes were exciting, and the host was amazing! Yes, the host was my sister—I’m not just obligated to tell you that because she’s my sister but it’s the truth! Of course, everything came with Sofitel’s flair of elegance, sumptuousness, and attention to detail. Celebrating new year’s eve was definitely a first for me! It was truly one for the books—A special and cherished occasion made even more memorable by the luxurious accommodations, service, and celebration.
Take a look below at some snapshots from Saint-Tropez Soriée, Sofitel’s new year countdown celebration!
It has exactly been 100 days since my Dad passed away and not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about him. It’s been hard to continue writing and updating during the first few months after his passing and I’ve decided to postpone it until today. 100 days after the death of a loved one means many different things to different religions—Some believed that the spirits are reborn after 3, 21, 49 or 100 days (or 7 years, even); some say that the family is in a state of sadness and mourning for 100 days after the burial or death.
Whatever the case may be, if felt right to come back to this today. Besides, I got my documentation streak from Dad (he has stacks and stacks of video tapes of us somewhere in the house!) and I couldn’t just stop writing and capturing moments and adventures.
I wrote this that night, in a flurry of tears and shallow breaths—I wanted to exhaust myself to sleep, hoping, wishing, praying that it was all a very, very bad, horrible, terrible dream. I thought I’d have a chance to read it during his wake but I never got to. Oddly, it didn’t feel right at the time.
To be honest, I don’t quite know what to say anymore… I guess, if you’re reading this, kindly send a thought or a prayer to my Dad.
